Vivitrol is used to treat alcohol abuse or dependence, and used to prevent relapse for persons with Opiate Use Disorder (OUD). There is also preliminary evidence that Vivitrol may be effective as a treatment for persons struggling with amphetamine and/or methamphetamine addiction.
Vivitrol injection delivers the drug naltrexone in a 28 day dose. Naltrexone has been shown to reduce cravings with alcohol and opioid use disorder, and may reduce cravings for other common addictions, such as methamphetamines and even for persons addicted to pornography.
Naltrexone also reduces the chance a person would overdose on opioid, making it the safest medication to administer for OUD. It also seems to minimize the reward a person experiences when using their drug of choice, which can help end the cycle of addiction.
